Be the person you'd want reading your worst commit.
This site points to a few places where people build and learn together. Those places only work when nobody has to brace for cruelty before joining in.
Treat people like people. Critique the idea, code, or decision without treating the person as the problem.
What that looks like in practice
Be curious before you are certain. Ask about the constraints, explain the tradeoff you see, and leave room for context you do not have.
Disagreement is welcome. Say what you think, show your work, and let the other person make their own call. Winning the exchange is not the goal.
Respect names, pronouns, experience, privacy, and boundaries. Give credit when somebody else's work helped you.
What does not belong here
Harassment, slurs, threats, stalking, intimidation, or unwanted sexual attention. Nothing clever to say about these. They are out.
Publishing private information about somebody else. That includes addresses, phone numbers, private messages, and anything shared in confidence.
Sustained disruption. Honest criticism is useful. Following somebody around, piling on, or making it impossible for everyone else to participate is not.
Spam and disguised advertising. A useful link is fine. Turning every exchange into a sales pitch is not.
Where this applies
This covers the spaces I control and direct contact connected to them. Behavior elsewhere may matter when it creates a real safety problem here.
What happens when somebody breaks the rule
There is no committee. It is me. I usually start small, but this is not a promise to walk through every step when somebody is in danger.
I point it out
Most problems are misunderstandings or somebody having a rough day. A clear note is usually enough.
I ask you to stop
A direct message from me, not a bot. Most problems end here.
I remove you from the space
You lose access to the place where it happened. I will tell you why when I can.
I take it further
Threats, stalking, or publishing private information may go to platform moderators or law enforcement.
If I get it wrong
Email the conduct inbox. I have reversed moderation calls before and I will do it again. I will not argue about somebody's safety in public.
If it's about me
I'm the one who runs this, which makes the conversation awkward. Email the conduct inbox anyway. If you do not want me to handle it alone, say so and I will ask somebody I trust to read it first.
